MARY ALICE CULLEN.
VAMPIRE. . ONE-HUNDRED AND NINE. ASHLEY GREENE
said they wanted change, i hope that you remain the same. to show that this is not a game, let's end this tragedy today.
NIGHT-LIGHT
Alice has lived her entire life- no, existence- in darkness, with the exception of faint glimmers of life snipping through the cracks. She was born Mary Alice Brandon, but anyone who's ever met her would know that, Mary, was not a name for her. Her first home was in Biloxi, Missouri in 1901, and though she doesn't recall any of her former life, she had a beautiful sister and two parents who cared about her deeply, though that was somewhat their downfall. Even as a human Alice began to have premonitions. There were moments throughout the day where she would slip from the world she was living in, and move into something completely different. Her sister would often refer to it as her "wonderland", but Alice's conservative parents considered it much more sinister then just a child's imagination. They grew up in a time where this would be considered magic, something dark and that would damn you to hell. They cared about their daughter, and wanted to fix her so that she could move on with them into heaven. What they didn't realize when they commited her to the asylum, was that even more "damnation" was on the way, in the form of immortality. She was kept in complete darkness while at the Asylum, and she clung to her memories for even the faintest life, but after a while, those disappeared, too. Her visions became her only companion, her only escape out of the darkness, and she began to depend on them before she slipped away like everything else. It was unbelievably hard on her, but she soon forgot that, too. It was the first memory she was glad to get rid of, extremely glad.
Alice had no idea how old she was when things turned for the worse, when the dreaded fire creeped through her skin. It wasn't until she found her reflection that she had any idea. She hadn't been in the Asylum long before any idea of time or date had faded away. When she had begun the "change", she couldn't focus on anything else. The pain was unreal, but atleast she could feel something. The hung onto that feeling, reveling in the fact that she was alive, and the fire played a constant reminder for her. Torwards the end of the change, when the fire went to her extremeties,(her fingers, toes, etc.) she began to have visions again. During the pain, she hadn't been able to focus on anything to make sense of the pictures flashing through her mind, but now she could. She trusted what they told her, she'd already began to feel the constant bite at her throat, craving something she didn't know how to get. Her visions told her she was something, something she'd never believed could ever exist even. The first one was beautiful; she saw herself running. Alice remembered thinking, "Is that me?" She was in wonder. The last vision before she woke up an immortal, was much more horrifying. She was taking the life of a human, two- no, three humans. Alice had become the monster her parents were so scared of, atleast, that's what she thought at the time. Later on, she realized that she became this because of her parents. When the fire was gone from her veins, a new fire began in the back of her throat. It was worse considering the multitude of humans that had been watching her writhe in pain: the other patients. None of the doctors had bothered to come, they had decided either she'd end up dead or the pain she was in was the dark magic being expelled from her body. They didn't care, one way or another. But, what did you expect from the people who had kept her in incessant darkness?
She was unable to contain yourself, the vampire who had changed her was no where to be found and she was alone, with the humans. She didn't know where she was, it was hard for her to focus on any of that. All she noticed was the thing that would be the answer to quenching her thirst. She ripped away the bars, her strength amazing her and moved torward the closest one. Even then, doing something that could never be beautiful, she looked elegant and graceful. Every move was like a dance, a choreographed ballet, and it was quick. She drained him of his blood, keeping it as quiet as possible, before moving to the other two. Those were quicker then the first, and much cleaner. She was horrified at herself, even apologizing to the bodies. She ran from the asylum, not looking back for even a second. This was her first vision, and she no longer saw it as something beautiful, something to admire. She was a horrible person, she had decided. If she was able to cry, she would have been sobbing as she ran. She didn't stop running for a long while, only slowing down when she began to force herself to think of it as like a snake and mouse. It was nature, she lied to herself. She knew that she didn't really believe that, but it kept her content.
The first few years of her life were some of the darkest, she was alone. Loneliness wasn't something that Alice enjoyed, but did anyone? She needed a companion, truly. That's when she decided to find one. Decision was key into her finding the Cullens. If she hadn't decided to find a new home, she might not have ever found them. Her visions painted a world so beautiful, so perfect for her, she couldn't resist. She fell in love with that world, even though she'd never experienced it, yet. Not only was it the family, but the way they lived. ALice had lived her entire second-life believing the worst; that she couldn't help this. That is was something she had to live with, feeding on humans. This family created for her a new way of living, and she tried to adapt to their life-style before going. She hadn't wanted to embarrass herself once arriving. It was extremely tough, but the thought of Carlisle and his family kept her going. Eventually, she began not to feed as often, atleast not on humans. She moved to animals, but occasionally, she would slip up. Then- she got her first vision of Jasper, someone who needed her. And, she needed him, too. The Cullens were great, but this was her... true love. Even then, she knew that he was the one, her soul mate. She didn't care about preparing for him, she sought him out immediately after seeing him for the first time.
Once she'd made the decision to find him, it was easy. She got the vision of where he was, and from there, it was like magic. Her soul had come back, she was vibrant and full of life. Not only had she changed his perspective, but he changed hers. He was her missile, streaking through the darkness. She waited in the diner for him, never doubting he would show up, though it took him ages, it seemed. Seeing him for the first time was everything she had seen before, but a little more. She saw his scars in full view, frowning at them. She was curious about how they had come to be on her Jasper's body, but she didn't ask, then. She would, though, and she was certain he would tell her. It was instantaneous, after Alice had told Jasper the story of the Cullens, he began his life with her and she with him. They were perfect together, and for once, Alice didn't feel so dark, she felt light when she was with him. Even though she knew that he would accompany her, it didn't take away from the excitement when it actually occured. She could barely keep her eyes off him the entire journey, and she was glad that he couldn't, either. She was almost tempted to forget the Cullens and begin a life with only Jasper, but then she remembered the friendships she made, the family she'd always wanted. Since she couldn't even remember her first, she was thoroughly excited for her new one. Besides, she'd still have Jasper even with the Cullens.
They arrived in Forks, and Alice found their home with ease. She was somewhat disappointed that Edward was gone, she knew that they would become undeniably close, but all the better, she'd be able to surprise him. As she knew they would, they allowed them into their home and Alice settled right in. She was more worried about Jasper, though, she knew that he'd always have a hard time controlling his thirst. She vowed to keep an eye on him, concerned. She had no fear that he wouldn't settle for this life, but she feared about the pain it would cause him to ignore the humans when they lived so close to the town. She'd help him, of course, and she was determined to make it as easy as possible for him. By then, she had learned that he could feel her emotions as well as everyone else's, so she tried not to worry and show more faith in him. But, he had told her his story and she couldn't imagine what that must be like for him. Alice just hoped he didn't start to resent her emotions, prayed even about it. He was her life now, and she didn't want that to go away. The same night was the first time she'd seen herself in the mirror, not her visions. During her years in the asylum, her hair had grown out tremendously. She took a pair of scissors to her long hair, sheering it out so she resembled a pixie. She loved that, and it fit her well. She didn't think of herself as beautiful, she didn't feel like that was an apt word to describe herself. Rosalie and Esme were beautiful, Alice's looks were completely different from the pair of them, she felt like she was more fantasy-like then them, not the true definition of beautiful. Her pale skin and her amber eyes were hypnotic, and she loved looking at herself. You see, she had no memories of how she looked before so it wasn't true wonder on how she changed, she just accepted that this was her new appearance. She had nothing to miss from her old self, and she was glad. She had learned of her "siblings" pasts by now and realized that she was better off not knowing, otherwise she'd be as bitter as Rosalie.
Things turned to be rather predictable in life after Jasper and her had moved in with the Cullens. Edward and her did develop a strong bond, stronger then with anyone else in the house-hold (aside from Jasper, of course) and Alice was desperate for him to find someone. Eventually, she got her wish. Bella was like her Jasper, and Alice saw that they would become close. Alice remembers scowling to herself when Edward took off for Denali, determined to get his head on straight. She had seen what Edward and Bella could possibly become, and also what she and Bella would also become. Esme was her best girlfriend, but Alice always craved friends and she wanted Bella. It was definitely something Alice would do, meddle in Edward's life, but she tried to let him do this on his own. She knew, in the end, it would be better for them both. Alice was ecstatic when Edward and Bella began to gravitate torward another, and the visions she'd seen of them became clearer. She knew there was a great possibility that Bells would end up as a vampire, and her sister-in-law. She also knew that Edward was going to do everything in his power to stop that resolve from occuring, but Alice didn't remember her human life, so she didn't know what Bella would be missing out on.
That day, playing baseball in the field, was one of the darker ones. Alice blamed herself for not seeing them, why hadn't she seen them? Victoria, Laurent, and James arrived with a bang louder then the crack of the bat when Edward made a hit. James had gotten territorial when Edward defended Bella, and Alice realized what was going to happen. Her vision rushed through her as soon as he had decided that he wanted: Bella. Alice was hit with that realization and wasn't about to let anything happen. She and Jasper went with Bella to Pheonix, while the rest hunted James. James, the tracker. She kept her hopes up that they would find and catch him before anything worse could happen. Once they arrived, Alice began getting visions of a ballet studio- though, she didn't know it was that before Bella confirmed it - and decided to keep a careful eye on Bella, just as she had Jasper. But yet, she hadn't seen Bella's true plan until she'd already done it. She knew Edward would be furious, and she was furious, too. Jasper tried to calm her down, not just using her ability, but nothing had upset her more then that. Atleast, up until then. Edward had arrived in time, though and James was no more. It left Alice with a bombshell, though. She had learned for the first time, her origin. Suddenly, Alice was thankful to Bella because if she hadn't been there, would James have tried to kill her? If he had, Alice was certain that Jasper woudl have tried to stop him, and would he have hurt her Jasper?
Alice found her way back to the asylum she had spent the majority of her years in, and stole her file away. She found her grave stone, and it was one of the few times she'd ever truly been infuriated. Her rage was only kept in by Jasper's help, and once again, she found herself needing him around, not just wanting. The date on the tombstone matched the same date that she was sent to the asylum. What was that supposed to mean? That she was already dead inside due to her premonition? She was furious with them, and especially her parents. They were long dead, but had passed on their house to their other daughter- Alice had a sister, Cynthia. That was someone she would have known back before she was sent away, and she felt extremely guilty that she had forgotten her. Cynthia had a daughter as well, whom was still alive and living in Biloxi, just down the road from where Alice had apparently grown up. It had never really occured to her that she had, had a family before becoming a vampire, but she felt as if she had missed so much. She had never even met her neice. If she hadn't had Jasper there, she might have succombed to the grief to a life lost. However, because she had him, she merely sighed and walked away from the house, hand and hand with Jasper.
Life went on from then, but nothing was the same. Jasper was still struggling, and they were nearing Bella's birthday. Alice was, of course, over excited and indulging herself in planning the party. The night of it, changed everything, though. It was terrible how something so simple as a paper cut, shattered many things. Jasper had lunged for Bella, and though he didn't touch her, Edward wasn't taking anymore chances. They decided to leave, go away from Forks. Away from Bella. Bella had become Alice's best go-to-girl, and she hadn't even been allowed to say good-bye. Edward had wanted a clean break, and Alice didn't have any say in the matter. She understood why Edward was doing this, she just didn't like it, not at all. Not only did Alice lose her friend in Bella, but she lost Edward, too. Edward went off on his own, in grief at what had happened, and Alice was finding it hard to deal with the pair of them. Then- she'd had the vision. Bella, her sister, commiting suicide? Alice told the rest of her family, and then bolted for Forks, taking Carlisle's mercedes. She knew when she arrived that her vision hadn't gotten the full story, and that cliff diving was officially the bane of her existence. Her temper at being wrong was only brought down by sweet relief that came from knowing that Bella was okay. She was then, but she wouldn't be when her world came crashing down. Rosalie, bitter Rosalie, had told Edward the false-news of Bella's death, and due to a communication problem, he believed the worst. Alice had just realized one of her best friends was safe, but her brother, was in terrible danger.
She was terrified that her visions would fail her just as they had done in the case of James and Bella. Alice would never forgive herself if she didn't stop Edward's final death. It wasn't fair for him to die believing that the love of his life was gone, she wouldn't allow that. That's one thing about Alice; as light and bubbly as she is, she'd very determined. With her, failure is not an option she'll allow easily. She's a fiery girl, ready to defend what she believes in and is very strong, emotionally and physically. She had to get there on time, she just had to. Alice is amazingly optimistic and she believes you need to let that show around people during struggles, it helps keep their spirits up. Part of this is brought on by her intense relationship with Jasper, she's learned to respect how your emotions effect everyone else. She continued to reassure Bella that Edward would be okay, trying her hardest to make it so. She wished so much to avoid this worry, she wanted to be doing something so mundane, like shopping. She felt bad for being so selfish, but she wanted it to be so. She had looked over at Bella, and thought about changing her, positive she'd be able to. That would make everything easier! She tried not to be selfish, to think of Edward and everyone else in Bella's life, but the temptation was hard. She already knew it would happen eventually, but not this way. She would talk to Edward, or better, he would already know simply by reading her thoughts.
Alice caught up with Bella after she'd stopped Edward, but her relief was short-lived. It was then that she met Aro for the first time, and even she had seen the gleam in his eye when he looked at her. It wasn't herself that she thought of though, she thought of Jasper. She wasn't about to lose him, even for a bigger family and she certainly wasn't about to be used. She absolutely would not let that happen. She saw the future, of course, but she didn't necessarily see the circumstances that brought it about. She wondered if Bella was going to be changed because of the Volturi. That would definitely cause some trouble in the family, of course. When they had convinced Aro that Bella would be changed, and soon, they were allowed to leave. Alice's self-pride and excitement about seeing Jasper again relaxed her from all the trouble one simple accident had caused. Alice was amused at that, nearly laughing from what had erupted from one simple paper cut. Her family was whole again, or would be when they touched back down on land. She rushed into Jasper's arms, forgetting everyone else in the room; it was only him. She would hold on to him until the apocalypse if she was allowed. Her true love, Jasper, it was unbelievable how her life had changed. She didn't only see darkness anymore, and her personality reflected that. She was, once again, the bubbly girl who floated through the world with a smile on her face. Her protective nature jutting out on occasion, though, she preferred to call it love. She often amazes people when trying to make the good out of the bad situation, especially she knows the outcome. And for her, family is the most important thing. Family is like her night light.
Note from Melly: I inferred alot about her past, like that her parents were conservative and such. I tried to add my own little twist, and I hope it came across okay. <3 Let me know if I should change it, though. I'll be happy to. ^^
"Mm, fresh til' death, you are," Alice laughed, glancing at herself over her shoulder. She was, of course, trying on clothes. She and Jasper had decided to go on hunting, without the others this time. Although, they weren't going far at all. It wasn't exactly rare that they'd gotten alone time, but the stress of everything that had happened since Bella's arrival in their lives, weighed down on them. It wasn't as if Alice didn't love Bella, but her sweet scent had started to drive Jasper nuts. That was another reason Alice had begun to yearn for the day that her visions became true and Bells became a vampire, it would be so much easier on her love. Alice had worried about him, trying not to, obviously, but she knew it must be hard on him. At times, it was pretty hard on Alice and she hadn't lived anything close to what Jasper had. Her eyebrows knit together, wondering if things would ever get easy in this house. She doubted it, but she also loved that aspect. The rough moments brought the family together, creating stronger bonds that brought every one closer. After finding out about her life before becoming a vampire, she felt strangely closer to Rosalie, something she'd never experienced. She was ecstatic about that.
Alice smiled at herself in the mirror, before floating downstairs and popping up behind Jasper. She put her hands in front of his face, grinning and saying in an oddly masculine voice, "Guess who," But, her laugh gave her away if her emotions hadn't already. Jasper seemed so in tune with her emotions that she rarely could surprise him, which was so annoying to her. She had always been someone who loved surprises and knowing that she'd very rarely be able to surprise him, couldn't piss her off more. She grabbed his thumb, tugging him along outside. He was so much larger then her, that just his thumb covered her palm let alone his whole hand. It wasn't just her hair that was pixie-like, obviously, her whole style was whimsical and her body like something out of a fairytale. She loved this about her, glad that she wasn't the classical sense of beauty like her "mother" and "sister". She liked who she was, not just appearance-wise, but her entire nature. She wouldn't want to be anyone else, and she didn't imagine herself to be happy if she was like someone else. She smiled over at Jasper, not feeling the need to fill the silence. His nearly black eyes looked back over at her, smiling as well. Alice knew that he was already in the hunt, and with a challenging smirk, she dropped his hand and raced off into the woods.
Alice wasn't a huge fan of feeding, honestly, and it was for a more odd reason then the others'. She didn't like the icky- sensation she got when sucking the blood from her victim. It just didn't sit well with her stomach, even if she loved the taste she was repulsed by every other aspect of it. She tried to feed quickly, so she didn't really have time to notice it and always waited longer then anyone else before hunting, that way she'd be distracted by her thirst. However, Alice did get quite a thrill out of hunting, she liked feeling unstoppable and the game was the fun part for her. She tried to do it with as little pain as possible transfered to the animal, she didn't want it to suffer but she did have a certain flare for asserting herself. Within seconds of entering the forest, she found a scent. Her head tilted back instantly, breathing in the scent of the buck while a faint moan escaped her lips. Her desire overwhelmed her and she seemed to dance through the forest, pouncing on the book as it ran through her trail. It was easy enough, she snapped his neck and fed quickly. She could already feel that annoying, wretching feeling in her stomach. She pulled away from the deer, frowning at him. "Sorry, fella," She said, before bouncing away to find one or two more. She was thirsty enough to have way more then one, and she didn't want to have to come back too soon. She'd much rather get it out of the way now, rather then have to go again.
After she fed two more times, she hunted for Jasper. When they went on these hunting trips, it was rare for Alice to stay with him. She didn't want him seeing her at her worst, even if she was actually pretty good at hunting. She'd just much rather him still see her as a fairie, and not someone who sucks the blood out of a tick-bitten deer. She found him, still feeding and smiled to herself. When it came to him, he made it beautiful and something worth watching. It was an art form and she loved watching Jasper as he did this, hell, she loved watching him period. She leapt up onto one of the tree branches hanging over the scene, sitting with one leg dangling over the branch and one pulled up to her knee. She glimmered in the sunset, like one of the mythological goddesses. When Jasper finally looked up, she smirked tauntingly. "Babe, if you need me to slow down, I'll be more then happy to do so," She said, laughing and hopping down from her branch. She landed lightly on her feet, not that there was a chance that she wouldn't, and pecked him gently on the cheek. Her one true love, how had she gotten so lucky? He stroked her face, and Alice leaned her head into his hand. Every touch brought her to the golden roads of happiness and she didn't know where she would be without him. She needed him, just like he needed her. "I love you, Alice," He said, kissing her gently on the lips. "I love you, too, forever."
